The Oxford 3000 is a list of the 3000 most important words to learn in English. The words at Oxford 3000 have been carefully selected by language experts and experienced teachers. While choosing the words, their priority in terms of importance and usage was taken into consideration.
How can I recognize these words in the dictionary?
Words in the Oxford 3000 are represented in the dictionary with a key symbol, and sometimes the most useful titles (specific meanings, phrasal verbs and phrases) are marked with a smaller key symbol. Word titles often have additional information in the form of more usage examples, special notes or helpful illustrations explaining synonyms or related words.
How were the words chosen?
Three criteria were taken into account when selecting words:
Frequently used words in English are included in the list. Words are selected based on information from the British National Corpus and Oxford Corpus Collection. Corpus means the electronic storage of written and spoken text consisting of hundreds of millions of words.
For a word to be included in the list as a keyword, it is not enough just to be encountered frequently in the corpus. Maybe the word is used too often, but it applies to a limited, specific area; like words in newspapers or scientific articles. Keywords that occur in different types of text are selected to avoid adding words used in a limited area to the list. In other words, keywords are not only common words but also appear in many different types of texts.
In addition, very important words that are not often used but that are familiar to English learners are also listed. For example, these are; words used for parts of the body, words used in travel, and words we use to describe the word when you do not know the exact word. These words have been defined in consultation with more than seventy experts in the fields of teaching and language training.
